NCCF constituted a Standard Development Group (SDG)
The National Standards Development for Forest Management Certification is One of the Most Significant Area of Expertise for IISD; Which represents a Significant Step towards ensuring Sustainable Forest Governance in India.
On the invitation from the Network for Certification and Conservation of Forests (NCCF), IISD has joined as a Premier Organisation for the Development of the Forest Management Standard, under the Standard Development Advisory Group. It is a structured initiative aimed at establishing Credible and Comprehensive Forest Management Standards, Suited to India’s Ecological, Social, and Economic Conditions.
Indian Institute of Sustainable Development (IISD), New Delhi, is Committed to fostering Social Justice, Environmental Sustainability and Economic Growth, for improving the Lives and Living Of the Citizens of India. IISD emphasizes the Empowerment of Marginalized Communities by Promoting Sustainable Use of Natural Resources, Such as Energy, Water, and Biodiversity, through Scientific Research, Grassroots Innovations and Inclusive Public Engagement. IISD envisions a Sustainable Path that is Inclusive and Equitable. Moreover, IISD addresses emerging Challenges Such as Growing Inequality, Unemployment, Climate Crises and the Depletion of Natural Resources. It advocates for Disruptive Platforms for Governance Reform, Promoting Transparency, Public Participation and Co- Created Responses to Environmental and Social Crises, with a Strong Emphasis on Sustainable Development.
NCCF is a National Non-Profit Body that Designs and Implements Forest Certification Standards tailored to India’s Ecological, Socio-Economic and Cultural Ethos. Its Forest Management Certification Standard Provides a Comprehensive Framework, based on Sustainability Principles, including Biodiversity Conservation, Soil and Water Protection, Carbon Sequestration, and the well-being of Forest-Dependent Communities (NCCF, 2023). NCCF’s this initiative, where IISD is a Close Knowledge Partner; Contributes to India’s Commitment to Sustainable Forest Management , as Outlined in the National Forest Policy and Global Frameworks like the UN Sustainable Development Goals (MoEFCC, 2018) advocating for its inclusion in Carbon Market mechanisms and ESG frameworks. The Certification enhances the Marketability of Forest Products, Such as Timber, Bamboo and Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs), allowing Forest Departments and Forest Dwellers to access Premium National and Global Markets. It also Promotes ILO’s Fair Labore Practices, Benefit-Sharing Mechanisms and the Recognition of Indigenous Rights (NCCF, 2020). Certification thus acts as a Tool for Combating Deforestation, Reduction in Forest Degradation, and Negative Climate Change impacts (MoEFCC, 2018).
The Standard was Developed, through a multi-stakeholder Process, involving individual, Forest Officials, Research Institution, Academia, Industry and Civil Society, ensuring Transparency, Consensus and Inclusivity. Furthermore, NCCF’s Standards are aligned with the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), enabling Indian Forest Products to gain Process Recognition in Global Markets.
IISD actively Participates in Technical Committees and Public Consultations Organized by NCCF, Offering insights that align Forest Certification, with Broader Sustainability Goals, such as Climate Change Mitigation, Biodiversity Conservation, and Livelihood Enhancement. Through Collaborative efforts with the NCCF and State Forest Departments, IISD has Contributed in advancing Pilot Certification Projects and awareness Campaigns, aimed at mainstreaming Sustainable Forest Governance across Country.
IISD Contributed in Developing 2 most Important Sustainability Standards, Such as,
• Forest Management Certification Standard (Inside Forest Management) and
• Tree Outside Forest Certification Standard (Outside Forest Certification).
